Microsoft is expanding what Copilot can do with files in OneDrive. A new Microsoft 365 Roadmap entry says users will be able to move from finding and analysing files to creating finished outputs such as summaries, dashboards and presentations directly from Copilot chat in OneDrive.
The feature first appeared on the Microsoft 365 Roadmap on 18 August 2026 as Roadmap ID 569215. A corresponding Message Center item, MC1459130, has now appeared in the latest Microsoft 365 feed, making this one of the fresher user-facing Copilot developments to watch.
For businesses already using Microsoft 365 Copilot, this matters because OneDrive is moving beyond simply helping you understand files. Microsoft is describing a workflow where Copilot can find the right material, analyse it, create something useful from it, and then let you save or share the result from OneDrive.

What is Microsoft changing in OneDrive Copilot?
Microsoft says improved Copilot file skills in OneDrive will let users go from files to finished work directly from chat.
The Roadmap description highlights four parts of that process:
- Find the right content rather than manually opening files one by one.
- Analyse files and data using Copilot.
- Create polished outputs, including summaries, dashboards and presentations.
- Save or share the results from OneDrive so the output becomes part of the normal Microsoft 365 workflow.
Microsoft has not published every detail of how each output type will look or which prompts will be available, so it is sensible not to assume a particular interface before rollout.
What will OneDrive Copilot be able to create from files?
Microsoft specifically names summaries, dashboards and presentations as examples of the polished outputs the improved experience can create.
That could be useful when the information you need is already spread across several documents, spreadsheets or presentations. Instead of reading everything and then starting a new piece of work from scratch, the intended workflow is to ask Copilot to work with the source material and produce a more finished result.
The important word here is examples. Microsoft has not said that these three output types are the complete list, nor has it yet documented every file type, size limit or creation scenario for the new capability.
How is this different from Copilot in OneDrive today?
Copilot in OneDrive can already help licensed users summarise supported files, ask questions about file contents and compare information without opening every document individually.
The new Roadmap item goes further. Instead of stopping at understanding the content, Microsoft is describing a workflow that can turn that content into a new finished output and keep the result inside the OneDrive collaboration flow.
In simple terms, the shift is from “tell me what is in these files” towards “use these files to help me produce the next piece of work”.
When is the new OneDrive Copilot capability arriving?
Microsoft's current Roadmap schedule targets preview in August 2026 and general availability in December 2026.
As with all Microsoft 365 Roadmap dates, those timings are estimates and can move. Preview availability also does not mean every eligible user will see the feature on the same day.
The appearance of Message Center notice MC1459130 is useful because it shows Microsoft is now moving beyond the original Roadmap listing into tenant communication about the capability.
Can Copilot See More Files Than You Expect?
Copilot works with the Microsoft 365 content a user is already allowed to access. Before giving AI a bigger role in creating work from business files, it is worth making sure those permissions still make sense.
If a user can already open a file, Copilot may be able to work with that file too. Good permissions become more important, not less, as Copilot becomes more capable.

This is a Copilot capability, not a general OneDrive feature automatically included for every Microsoft 365 user.
Microsoft's current support material says work and school users need a relevant Copilot licence to use Copilot in OneDrive, and that not every feature is available to every user or market at the same time.
For a UK SME, that means a Business Basic, Business Standard or Business Premium subscription on its own should not be treated as confirmation that these new creation features will appear. Check the user's actual Copilot entitlement before promising the functionality.
What files can OneDrive Copilot use?
Microsoft's existing OneDrive Copilot documentation says Copilot works with files the user has permission to access. That includes files in their own OneDrive and content shared with them where the experience supports it.
This does not mean Copilot bypasses Microsoft 365 permissions. If a user cannot access a file, Copilot should not grant them access to it. The practical risk is the opposite: old or overly broad permissions can become more noticeable because AI makes it easier to find and work with information that was already technically available.
That is why a Microsoft 365 permissions review before a Copilot rollout remains worthwhile.
How could this help a small or medium-sized business?
The strongest use cases are likely to be situations where staff already spend time turning existing business information into something new.
- A manager could ask Copilot to analyse project files and help produce a concise status summary.
- A sales team could work from existing notes and documents to create a presentation draft.
- A business owner could use data held in supported files as the starting point for a dashboard-style output.
- A team could save or share the result from OneDrive rather than copying information between separate AI tools and Microsoft 365 manually.
Those are workflow examples rather than promises about exact templates or layouts. The quality of the result will still depend on the source material, the prompt and human review.
What should businesses do before it arrives?
There is no reason to redesign your OneDrive setup just because this Roadmap item exists, but businesses planning to use Copilot should do a few sensible things now:
- Review permissions and sharing. Make sure users do not have access to old project folders or sensitive material they no longer need.
- Confirm Copilot licensing. Separate features included with ordinary Microsoft 365 subscriptions from capabilities that require a Copilot licence.
- Choose useful pilot scenarios. Test it on real business work where summaries, presentations or data analysis would save time.
- Keep human review in the process. A polished AI-generated output can still contain mistakes or omit important context.
- Set expectations around rollout dates. Microsoft 365 features arrive in stages and Roadmap dates can change.
