If the Microsoft 365 Copilot app suddenly has a different name, icon or web address, it is not a different product appearing on your device. Microsoft is simplifying the app and bringing personal and work Copilot accounts into one application.
The change applies to people using Microsoft 365 Copilot and Copilot Chat on the web, Windows, Mac and mobile. Microsoft began the mobile and web rollout in mid-August 2026, with wider desktop and web-address changes following during September.
The most visible changes are a shorter Microsoft Copilot name, a new icon and a move from m365.cloud.microsoft to copilot.cloud.microsoft.
What exactly is changing?
Microsoft is making four user-facing changes:
- The Microsoft 365 Copilot app will use the simpler name Microsoft Copilot app.
- The application will receive an updated icon.
- The web address will move from m365.cloud.microsoft to copilot.cloud.microsoft, with users redirected automatically.
- The same app will support both work or school accounts and personal Microsoft accounts, with clearer visual cues showing which one is active.
Microsoft says the underlying security, privacy, compliance and enterprise controls are not changing as part of this update.
Why is Microsoft changing the Copilot app?
Microsoft wants one Copilot application across personal and business use rather than separate-looking experiences with overlapping names.
That is simpler in principle, but it also creates an obvious question for staff: am I using my managed work account or my personal account? Microsoft is adding visible cues to answer that question.
In the work or school experience, users should see a different background colour and a Work label beneath their profile. Microsoft says the existing green data-protection shield will remain.
When will the Copilot name, icon and URL change?
Microsoft's current rollout schedule is:
- Mid-August 2026: worldwide rollout begins for mobile and web apps, with optional early access for Windows and Mac.
- Early September 2026: standard rollout of the new web-address redirect begins.
- Mid-September 2026: worldwide rollout begins for Windows and Mac apps.
- Late September 2026: deferred rollout of the web redirect begins.
The Message Center announcement was published on 13 August and materially updated on 21 August 2026 to revise the redirect timing.

Yes. Microsoft says the new address remains within its *.cloud.microsoft domain. Users who visit the old m365.cloud.microsoft address will be redirected as the change reaches their tenant.
Businesses following Microsoft's recommended Microsoft 365 network configuration should not need to add a new domain solely because of this change.
As always, staff should be cautious with lookalike links in email. The genuine hostname ends exactly in cloud.microsoft; an address that merely includes those words elsewhere may not belong to Microsoft.
Does this change what Copilot can see?
No. Renaming the app does not merge personal and business data. Microsoft says information entered in the personal experience does not flow into the work or school experience, and vice versa.
Existing enterprise controls remain in place, and administrators can continue to restrict personal Microsoft-account access to the app using tenant controls.

What should businesses do?
- Tell staff the change is genuine. This will reduce support calls when the name, icon or bookmark changes.
- Show users the Work label and green shield. They should confirm they are in the managed business experience before using company information.
- Update bookmarks and internal guidance. References to m365.cloud.microsoft or the old Microsoft 365 Copilot app name will gradually become outdated.
- Review personal-account access. Decide whether staff should be allowed to sign into personal Copilot accounts on managed devices.
- Do not confuse this with a new licence. The app rename does not turn Copilot Chat into the paid Microsoft 365 Copilot product.
