If Microsoft Teams or new Outlook suddenly refuses to open on an Arm-based Windows 11 PC, Microsoft has confirmed that an August 2026 Windows security update may be responsible. The problem can affect devices including Surface Pro 11 and Surface Laptop 7, particularly new or freshly reset computers.
Microsoft says Teams and new Outlook may fail to launch, close immediately or stop unexpectedly. The current workaround is to update the Auto Super Resolution Package through Microsoft Store to version 1.0.19.0 or later.
Classic Outlook, Word, Excel and other applications are not known to be affected by this particular issue.
What problem has Microsoft confirmed?
Microsoft opened the known issue on 1 September 2026 after reports that Microsoft Teams and new Outlook for Windows could fail after Windows security updates released on or after 11 August.
The problem is listed as mitigated, which means Microsoft has published a workaround but has not yet delivered the final Windows update that resolves the underlying issue.
Microsoft says a permanent resolution will arrive in a future Windows update. Until then, affected users should update the supporting package through Microsoft Store.
Which computers are affected?
The issue affects Arm-based Windows PCs. Microsoft specifically names Surface Pro 11 and Surface Laptop 7 as examples, but the wording is not limited to Microsoft-branded hardware.
The affected platforms include:
- Windows 11 version 24H2
- Windows 11 version 25H2
- Windows 11 version 26H1
Arm-based PCs commonly use Qualcomm Snapdragon processors. A computer with a conventional Intel or AMD processor is not included in Microsoft’s published scope for this issue.
Microsoft says the problem is most likely on a new or freshly imaged computer that has received Windows updates but has not yet installed all available Microsoft Store updates.
What will users notice?
An affected user may see one or more of these symptoms:
- Microsoft Teams does not open
- Teams displays briefly and then closes
- New Outlook fails to launch
- New Outlook closes unexpectedly
- Both apps stop working after Windows updates or after a new PC is configured
Because other Office applications may continue working, the failure can look like two unrelated application problems. Microsoft’s advisory indicates that both symptoms can have the same underlying package dependency.
How do I get Teams and Outlook working again?
- Open Microsoft Store on the affected PC.
- Select Downloads.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates, including the latest Auto Super Resolution Package.
- Confirm that the package is version 1.0.19.0 or later.
- Restart the computer, then test Teams and new Outlook again.
If the Store does not find the update, check that the device can reach Microsoft Store and that organisational policy is not blocking Store application updates. A managed business device may need its IT administrator to review the update configuration.
Microsoft’s guidance does not tell users to remove the Windows security update. Installing the Store package preserves the security update while addressing the application problem.

Is a new laptop already causing problems?
We can identify whether the cause is Windows, Microsoft 365, device policy or a hardware-specific issue.
Book a Business Technology MOT →What should I avoid doing?
Do not begin by reinstalling Office, deleting the Outlook profile or factory-resetting the PC. Those steps take considerably longer and may not address the missing Store package.
Do not assume the Microsoft 365 account or licence is faulty simply because both Teams and Outlook fail. Check the processor type, Windows version and Microsoft Store updates first.
Removing a current Windows security update should not be the routine fix when Microsoft has supplied a less disruptive workaround. Security updates address vulnerabilities, so rollback should only be considered under controlled IT guidance.
What should businesses do?
- Identify Arm devices. Record which laptops use Snapdragon or another Arm processor.
- Check new-device procedures. Make Microsoft Store updates part of the build and handover process, not just ordinary Windows Update.
- Tell the helpdesk about the known issue. This prevents unnecessary Office repairs when Teams and Outlook fail together.
- Review update controls. Confirm that policies intended to control Store access are not preventing required package updates.
- Keep Windows supported. The workaround does not remove the need to run a supported Windows release. Our guide explains the approaching Windows 11 24H2 support deadline.
- Watch for Microsoft’s final fix. The issue remains mitigated rather than resolved.
If several users report failures after updates, record the device model, processor, Windows version and exact time the symptoms began. That evidence makes support and remediation much faster.
Does this affect classic Outlook?
Microsoft says classic Outlook is not known to be affected. The confirmed problem concerns new Outlook for Windows and Microsoft Teams on Arm-based devices.
Classic Outlook might provide temporary access to email where it is already installed and supported, but switching applications is not Microsoft’s primary workaround. Updating the Auto Super Resolution Package addresses the dependency affecting the newer applications.
This is also separate from recent Microsoft 365 interface changes. If only text suggestions have disappeared while Outlook still opens normally, see our explanation of why Word and Outlook text predictions may be switched off.
Quick answers
Why will Teams not open on my Surface Pro?
An August 2026 Windows update can leave a required package out of date on some Arm-based devices. Open Microsoft Store, check for updates and install Auto Super Resolution Package version 1.0.19.0 or later.
Why does new Outlook close immediately?
If the PC has an Arm processor and recently installed Windows updates, it may be the same Microsoft-confirmed issue affecting Teams. Update Microsoft Store packages before reinstalling Outlook.
Are Intel and AMD computers affected?
Microsoft’s published issue is scoped to Arm-based Windows PCs. Similar symptoms on Intel or AMD hardware may have a different cause.
Has Microsoft fixed the problem?
Microsoft lists it as mitigated because a workaround is available. A permanent resolution is planned for a future Windows update.
Should I uninstall the Windows security update?
Not as the first response. Microsoft’s workaround is to update the Auto Super Resolution Package through Microsoft Store.
The important point
If Teams and new Outlook both stop opening on a Surface or another Arm-based Windows laptop, check Microsoft Store updates before carrying out a lengthy repair.
Installing Auto Super Resolution Package version 1.0.19.0 or later is Microsoft’s current workaround. Businesses should also update their device-build process so newly configured Arm PCs receive both Windows and Store updates before they are handed to users.
